One of the biggest impacts businesses have on the environment is from the energy they consume, and breweries are no different. The checklist below is what the Iowa Waste Reduction Center looks at when reviewing a brewery’s energy consumption and efficiencies they may have in place.

____ Pipes and process lines free of leaks (0-3 Points)  

____ Insulated pipes, plumbing, refrigerant, and process lines in good repair (0-2 Points)

____ Efficient entries to walk-in refrigerators/freezers (0-2 Points) 

____ Air filters in good repair/free from excess debris (1 Point)  

____ HVAC duct work in good repair (2 Points) 

____ Installation of motion sensors or timers for lighting (1 Point) 

____ Installation of high-efficiency HVAC unit(s) (0-4 Points) 

____ Brewhouse heat recovery and efficiency projects in place (0-3 Points)  

____ Installation of high-efficiency water heater (2 Points) 

____ Installation of high-efficiency appliances and electronics (0-2 Points) 

____ Installation of CFL, LED, or other high efficiency lighting system (0-3 Points)

____ Use of programmable thermostat (0-2 Points) 

____ Use of renewable energy (0-3 Points) 

____ Installation of high-efficiency windows and doors (0-3 Points) 


Iowa Brewers Guild Allied MemberThe Iowa Green Brewery Certification was developed by the Iowa Waste Reduction Center at the University of Northern Iowa with the help of the Iowa Brewers Guild and a few breweries across Iowa.
