In October 2016, the IWRC announced a new grant-funded project - New Project Starts to Help Iowa Communities Reduce Food Waste.
The project, funded by the Rural Utilities Service of the United States Department of Agriculture, allowed the IWRC to provide community-level food waste reduction assistance to four Iowa rural communities. Outreach activities were determined based on the needs of each individual community whether it was directly with residents or through industrial, commercial, and institutional entities such as the schools. Case studies were written for each community detailing results from food waste audits as well as the recommendations and strategies being implemented to reduce food waste and increase food recovery and recycling.
